To plan, organize, and direct assigned parks and grounds maintenance activities within the Parks and Grounds Maintenance Division of the Facilities Services Department; to coordinate assigned activities with other divisions or departments; and to provide highly responsibility technical support to the Parks and Grounds Superintendent.
The Senior Supervisor level recognizes positions that provide full second-line, direct supervision to employees within a work section and/or assumes substantive and significant programmatic responsibility in a defined area or specialty.
Receives general direction from the Parks and Grounds Superintendent or management and supervisory staff.
Exercises direct supervision over assigned supervisory personnel.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Participate in and perform parks and grounds maintenance duties of a complex or difficult nature, including landscaping, gardening, and associated basic building trades work such as plumbing, painting, masonry, carpentry, and electrical.
- Recommend and implement section goals and objectives for assigned areas of parks and grounds maintenance responsibility; establish performance standards and methods for parks and grounds maintenance activities; develop and implement policies and procedures.
- Plan, develop and oversee the work of staff involved in parks and grounds maintenance activities.
- Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; implement improvements and modifications; prepare various reports on operations and activities.
- Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for staff, supplies, materials, and equipment; monitor and control expenditures.
- Participate in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance evaluations; recommend discipline; implement discipline procedures as directed.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other County employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Five years of increasingly responsible experience in groundskeeping or park maintenance, including two years of supervisory responsibility.
Training: Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college with major course work in arboriculture, horticulture, forestry, park management or a related field.
Required License or Certificate:

Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate from California Department of Food and Agriculture may be required.

May need to possess a valid driver's license as required by the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.
